「up to」の意味3パターン(至るまで/企む/能力がある)

今回は「up to」の表現をまとめていきます！

とりあえずここだけ覚えて！！

up to
意味①「～に至るまで」
意味②「企む」
意味③「能力がある」

「up to」のイメージ

ある最大値や到達可能なレベルを表すのに使われ「～に至るまで」の表現です。

used for saying the most that an amount can be, or what level it can reach

Some dinosaurs were up to twenty-seven meters long.
「体長が27メートルにもなる恐竜もいた。」

Children are forced to work up to 19 hours a day, 7 days a week in the factories.
「子供たちは工場で1日19時間、週7日も働かされています。」

決められた基準や人の期待を表すのにも使われ「～に至るまで」ともなります。

「期待に至るまでのプレーができなかったと思います。」

They failed to match up to the standards set by the company.
「彼らは、会社が設定した基準を満たすことができませんでした。」

秘密なことやいけないことを行うイメージで「企む」の表現です。

「このように静かにしているときは、何かを企んでいるのだと思います。」

I wondered what my daughter was really up to.
「娘が本当に何を企んでいるのか気になった。」

何かをする要件をすべて満たしていて「能力がある」の表現です。

He’s not really up to the job.
「彼にはその仕事をする力がないようだ。」

She’s supposed to leave the hospital tomorrow, but I don’t think she’s up to it.
「彼女は明日退院することになっているが、その力があるとは思えないんだ。」
