「なめる/侮る」

underestimate

under(下に)+estimate(評価する)で「なめる/侮る」の意味です。

to think that someone is not as good, clever, or skilful, as they really are
LONGMAN

I’ve been underestimating him for a while now.
「彼のことをだいぶなめていたよ。」

I underestimated this project and did not prepare properly.
「私は今回のプロジェクトをなめていて、準備をちゃんとしておかなかった。」

重要なことを軽くあしらうイメージで「なめる/侮る」の意味です。
