「rather」の意味2パターン＋関連フレーズ(or rather)

今回は「rather」の意味をまとめていきます！

意味①「ある程度/かなり」
意味②「むしろ」

ratherの意味

「more than a little, but less than very.」というニュアンスで「ある程度/かなり」の意味です。

used to mean “fairly” or “to some degree,” often when you are expressing slight criticism, disappointment, or surprise
Oxford Dictionary

My own position is rather different.
「私自身の立場はある程度違う。」

前に言ったことと反対のアイデアを持ち出して「むしろ」の意味です。

used to introduce an idea that is different or opposite to the idea that you have stated previously

The walls were not white, but rather a sort of dirty gray.
「壁は白ではなく、むしろ汚れた灰色のような色をしていた。」

いくつか選択肢がある中で「～したほうがいい」の意味です。

used to say that you would prefer to do or have something

I’d rather have a quiet night in front of the TV.
「テレビの前で静かな夜を過ごしたい。」

A:I think you’d better ask her.
B:I’d rather not.
「彼女に聞いた方がいいと思いますよ。」
「私はそうしたくないです。」

「～の代わりに」の意味です。

instead of

I think you’d call it a lecture rather than a talk.
「トークというよりレクチャーと言った方がいいかもしれません。」

Rather than go straight on to university why not get some work experience first?
「いきなり大学に進学するのではなく、まずは仕事を経験してみてはいかがでしょうか。」

前に言ったことを訂正して「いやむしろ」「正確に言うと」の意味です。

used before correcting something that you have said, or giving more specific information
LONGMAN

We all went in Vic’s car, or rather his father’s.
「みんなでVicの車、というか彼のお父さんの車に乗った。」
