仮定法のセットでも使われる「otherwise」表現まとめ

今回は「otherwise」の表現をまとめていきます！

とりあえずここだけ覚えて！！

otherwise
意味①「そうしないと」(言うことを聞かないと)
意味②「そうでなければ」(過去が違っていたら)
意味③「それ以外は」

otherwise

A otherwise Bで「A(薦められていること)をしないとB(悪い結果)だ」というイメージで「さもなければ」の表現です。 Bの部分は今後のことが表現されるので、未来形が使われます。

used when saying what bad thing will happen if something is not done
LONGMAN

Put your coat on, otherwise you’ll get cold.
「コートを着なさい、そうしないと寒くなるよ。」

You’ll have to go now, otherwise you’ll miss your bus.
「今行かないと、バスを乗り過ごすよ。」

A otherwise Bで「A(過去に起こったこと)と違うことが起こったら、Bだったのに」と想像する時に使えるイメージで「そうでなければ」の表現です。Bの部分は実際に起こったことではないので、仮定法が使われます。

used when saying what would have happened or might have happened if something else had not happened

We were delayed at the airport. Otherwise we would have been here by lunch time.
「私たちは空港で遅れていた。そうでなければ、ランチタイムにはここに到着していただろう。」

They got two free tickets to Canada, otherwise they’d never have been able to afford to go.
「彼らはカナダ行きの無料チケットを2枚手に入れたが、そうでなければ行く余裕はなかっただろう。」

A otherwise Bで「Aを除くとBだ」のイメージで、「それ以外は」の表現です。

except for what has just been mentioned

He was tired but otherwise in good health.
「彼は疲れていたが、それ以外は健康だった。」

I could hear the distant noise of traffic. Otherwise all was still.
「遠くから交通量の多い音が聞こえてきた。それ以外は、すべて静寂に包まれていた。」
