今回は「奪う」の表現をまとめていきます！

とりあえずここだけ覚えて！！

rob
物理的に力ずくで「奪う」

deprive
誰かの権利を「奪う」

rob

物理的に力ずくで「奪う」のイメージです。盗むに近い感覚です。「rob (人) of (物)」で「(人)から(物)を奪う」となります。

to steal money or property from a person, bank etc
LONGMAN

They killed four policemen while robbing a bank.
「彼らは、銀行強盗の際に4人の警官を殺害した。」

They threatened to shoot him and robbed him of all his possessions.
「「撃つぞ」と脅され、持ち物をすべて奪われた。」

A 77-year-old woman was robbed at knifepoint.
「77歳の女性がナイフを突きつけられて強盗に遭いました。」

誰かの権利を「奪う」のイメージです。相手が何か必要なことをやろうとするのを防ぐ時に使われます。「deprive (人) of (物)」で「(人)から(物)を奪う」となります。

to prevent someone from having something, especially something that they need or should have
LONGMAN

A lot of these children have been deprived of a normal home life.
「多くの子供の普通の生活が奪われている。」

When they deny their origins they also deprive themselves of a future.
「自分の起源を否定することは、自分の未来を奪うことでもある。」

He was deprived of his hope and depressed.
「希望を奪われた彼は落ち込んでいた。」
