今回は「向き合う」「直面する」の表現をまとめていきます！
とりあえずここだけ覚えて！！

「向き合う/直面する」

「向き合う/直面する」
face
何かに対して顔を向けて「向き合う」「直面する」を意味します。
主に以下2つの意味があります。
①物理的に「向かい合う」
to be opposite someone or something, or to be looking or pointing in a particular direction
LONGMAN
The two men stood facing each other, smiling.
「二人は向かい合って微笑みながら立っていた。」
「二人は向かい合って微笑みながら立っていた。」
When he turned to face her, he seemed annoyed.
「振り向くと、彼は困ったような顔をしていた。」
「振り向くと、彼は困ったような顔をしていた。」
②問題に「向かい合う」
if you face or are faced with a difficult situation, or if a difficult situation faces you, it is going to affect you and you must deal with it
LONGMAN
He is facing the biggest challenge of his career.
「彼は自分のキャリアの中で最大のチャレンジに直面している。」
「彼は自分のキャリアの中で最大のチャレンジに直面している。」
As the project comes to an end, many workers now face an uncertain future.
「プロジェクトの終了に伴い、多くの労働者が将来の不安を抱えています。」
「プロジェクトの終了に伴い、多くの労働者が将来の不安を抱えています。」
confront
faceよりも「積極的に向き合う」「前向きに向き合う」のイメージです。
主に以下2つの意味があります。
①物理的に「向かい合う」
to face someone in a threatening way, as though you are going to attack them
LONGMAN
He intends to confront the enemy.
「彼は敵に立ち向かうつもりである。」
「彼は敵に立ち向かうつもりである。」
We have to confront our angry customers.
「私たちは怒った顧客に向き合わなければいけない。」
「私たちは怒った顧客に向き合わなければいけない。」
②問題に「向かい合う」
if a problem, difficulty etc confronts you, it appears and needs to be dealt with
LONGMAN
The problems confronting the new government were enormous.
「新政府が直面した問題は非常に大きかった。」
「新政府が直面した問題は非常に大きかった。」
What problems are you confronting now?
「今はどんな問題に立ち向かっているの？」
「今はどんな問題に立ち向かっているの？」
