back

forwardの反対の意味で「後方に」「後ろに」進めるのイメージです。

in the opposite direction from the way you are facing
LONGMAN

She tilted her head back to look at him.
「彼女は首を傾げて彼を見た。」

He glanced back at the house.
「ちらっと家を振り返ってみた。」

He stepped back a pace.
「彼は一歩後ろに下がった。」

こちらもbackと同様の意味で使われ「後方に」「後ろに」進めるのイメージです。

LONGMAN

She took a step backwards.
「彼女は一歩後退した。」

While driving, check backwards as well.
「運転中は後方も確認してください。」

前置詞として「～の後ろに」のイメージです。in front ofの反対の意味で使われます。

LONGMAN

I turned to speak to the person standing behind me.
「私は後ろに立っている人に話しかけようとした。」

Jane shut the door behind her.
「ジェーンはドアを閉めてしまった。」
